DC Electric Motor Basic Working Principles 3D Animation

A DC motor is any of a class of rotary electrical motors that converts direct current electrical energy into mechanical energy. Electric motors can seem very mysterious! How do they use electricity to start rotating? Let’s break it down step by step to understand how it works.

Topics covered in this video: circuits, current, magnets, electromagnets, armature, commutator, brushes, stator, and rotor. This video only covers DC motors. The primary principle that makes a DC motor work is based on how magnets react to each other: like magnetic poles repel and unlike magnetic poles attract.

An electric motor is generally designed for continuous rotation, or for linear movement over a significant distance compared to its size. Magnetic solenoids are also transducers that convert electrical power to mechanical motion, but can produce motion over only a limited distance.

When the current flows from the positive terminal and passes through a half circle commutator that is attached to each end of the coil of wire, The magnetic field that is generated will cause the coil to make another 180° turn in the same direction to complete a full rotation. To keep the rotor rotating, the motor has a commutator, the commutator would reverse the current through the stator and this way reverse the magnetic field. This way the rotor can keep spinning./wikipedia
